Can We Talk?
Aspen Avionics Wirelessly Connects iPads with Avionics
Wondering when your avia- tion apps on your smart- phone or iPad will talk to your avionics? That day will soon be here, thanks to a new concept introduced by Aspen Avionics.
The company announced the creation of its “Connected Panel” that includes hardware, software and applications that provide two- way wireless communications between panel avionics and hand- held devices. Initial applications are in development for Apple iOS and Android platforms.
“Mobile devices have revolution- ized how pilots use flight data, but until now these smart devices have been unable to communicate with

Brad Hayden, vice
president of market-
ing for Aspen Avion-
ics. “The Evolution
Flight Display prod-
ucts are interoperable
with a variety of new and legacy avionics products from mul- tiple manufacturers, making Evolu- tion a natural networker of flight data. Aspen’s Connected Panel creates a wireless bridge between smart devices and the aircraft’s cer- tified avionics, increasing the pilot’s access to data and enhancing the utility of their mobile devices.”
The Connected Panel hardware is a small box mounted behind
the aircraft’s panel. Called the CG100, the unit contains wireless, Bluetooth, USB connections and flash storage.
Among the initial products for Connected Panel is ForeFlight Mobile that will allow users to cre- ate flight plans on their iPads and wirelessly load them into the Ben- dix/King KSN 770, a nav/com/GPS unit that is under development. Pilots will also be able to tune radi- os from their iPads.
Pilots will also be able to down- load aircraft performance data through AvConnect, an aircraft and pilot management application. The AvConnect iPad app will automati- cally record pilot and aircraft data from installed systems and seam- lessly create entries in the cloud- based portion of its application.
Connected Panel will be available to other GPS navigators in the mar- ketplace. In addition to AvConnect and ForeFlight, Avidyne, Jeppesen, JP Instruments, Parrot, Pinnacle Aerospace, PS Engineering, Seattle Avionics, and Sporty’s Pilot Shop have all committed to building products and applications that will be Connected Panel-enabled. Along with Aspen’s open hardware archi- tecture, Connected Panel develop- ers will also have access to an open API with no licensing or royalty fees.
