Avidyne’s New Touch-Screen Navigator is a Plug-and-Play Replacement for GNS530
Touch-screen avionics were all the rage at this year’s AirVenture Oshkosh, with Avidyne introducing an innovative and economical entrant. The IFD540 nav/com/GPS features a touch-screen user interface that is a “plug-and- play” replacement for the popular Garmin GNS530 navigators.
The IFD540 has a highly capable, easy-to-use FMS that meets TSO- C146c for full SBAS/LPV approach guidance. It features easy-to-use flight planning with “one-touch” victor airway and jet-route naviga- tion, Avidyne’s exclusive GeoFill waypoint nomination, and FMS Vectors capability. FMS Vectors provides fully coupled guidance through all phases of flight without manual autopilot interaction and suspending of flight plans typically associated with previous-genera- tion systems.
The IFD540 supports Avidyne’s CMax Electronic Approach Charts & Airport Diagrams, and also includes Terrain Awareness and Alerting as standard, with an option for integrated Class-B TAWS func- tionality.
The plug-and-play IFD540 is a slide-in replacement for the popu- lar GNS530 navigators, providing a larger screen area with 400 percent
more pixels, and a much easier to use, button and touch-screen inter- face. The IFD540 is designed to integrate with all the existing equip- ment, which the 430/530 systems previously operated, including a long list of PFDs, EFIS, CDIs, HSIs, remote sensors, discrete, autopi- lots, and MFDs. Since it is the same physical size as the 530, it fits into the same tray, uses the same anten- nas, and can be installed with no wiring changes.
The IFD540 has a retail price of $16,995 including tray and installa- tion kit, and is expected to be avail- able i•n the second half of 2012.
