The Gulf Coast’s vibrant economy benefits from tourism to a large degree, which is the reason so much reconstruction has been done so quickly. The region’s famous pristine beaches were quickly built back and the waterfront casinos, allowed under Mississippi law, reopened in short order. There are 11 gambling meccas in the GPT area, including MGM’s Beau Rivage resort, originally built by Steve Wynn, which features 1,740 rooms, 2,100 slots and 93 tables. As the United States’ third-largest gambling destination, Mississippi’s Gulf Coast has much more to offer than a desert or a boardwalk. Major golfing, serious fishing, water sports and luxury spas and shopping round out the possibilities.
The 2010 BP oil spill was a Gulf Coast disaster that didn’t happen, according to the local residents. No oil showed up on the Biloxi beaches, the seafood was unaffected, and there was never any reason to avoid visiting. Yet, as can be typical with human nature, the tales grew taller as time and distance were added. It’s taken much active public relations work to offset the doom/gloom image cast by info-bites.
Suffice it to say, the Gulfport- Biloxi area has come roaring back from the pounding it took six years ago. Its rebuilt infrastructure, including GPT airport, makes it a very attractive destination, and with the new Million Air fac•ility it will be an excellent international gateway for business travelers.
