all easy to do at night, in weather, over shark-infested water 100 nm off shore.
But, the truth is, from time to time over the previous five years of ownership, the 340’s engine fire detection system had inexplicably flashed at us, much to the diagnostic frustration of the maintenance shop. Given that history, and the FXE mechanic’s comments, we decide that it is when and where the light comes on that is truly alarming, not so much the light itself.
During the following week we fly to the Bahamas, then over to the Yucatan Peninsula, and from there westward to the Pacific coast of Mexico. We return home to Seattle via the California and Oregon coast. It’s all daylight flying, mostly over land, and, of course, the fire detection system behaves itself the entire time.
It‘s several years, however, before we‘re willing to again make a personal flight•across the Gulf of Mexico via Q102 in a Cessna 340 on a dark night. T&T
