As pilots and aircraft owners, we spend wisely on our currency and training as well as on maintenance and equipment to operate our aircraft in the safest possible manner. That addresses three of the four FAA- issued documents we need to fly: pilot certificate, airworthiness and registration. We can take the same proactive approach to protecting the most tenuous of the FAA issued documents, your airman’s medical certificate. We insure and maintain our aircraft, and we train for and practice our flying skills. Why would we not do the same for our health and medical certificate?
Few non-professional pilots are aware of the resources available to protect their medical certificate. Airline pilot and air traffic controller professional organizations employ one such resource to protect their medical certificates, careers and health. The same services are available to us as aircraft owners and Part 91 operators. Flying is our passion, if not a necessity; we should protect our ability to continue to enjoy the freedom of flight.
I sought out the best practical advice I could find for all pilots on how to respond to that most unwelcome letter. Dr. Snyder was kind enough to agree to summarize his knowledge and experience for our benefit in his accompanying article that follows, Tips for Taking Your FAA Medical Examination and Protecting Your airman’s Medical Certificate.
Read carefully and take his practical advice to heart. You have before you a rare opportunity to gain real i•nsights that could be your key to keeping a valid medical certificate. T&T
