More importantly, in September, 1940 the British Commonwealth ordered 180 T-50s, to be used by the RCAF for the training of bomber pilots in Canada, thereby rescuing a barely-solvent Cessna Aircraft Company. In all, 830 of the RCAF’s “Crane” trainers were delivered, and the U.S. military subsequently bought the airplane as AT-17 trainers and UC-78 utility airplanes. In Navy dress, it was called the JRC. As with many U.S. aircraft manufacturers, Cessna was delivered from economic distress by its wartime efforts, at one point rolling a completed airplane out the door every 10 minutes. Some 5,402 of the Cessna twins were built before production halted in 1944; only a handful still exist today.Serendipitously, from the standpoint of wartime acceptance, Wallace chose to build the Bobcat much as he had the Airmasters; the fuselage was fabric-covered steel tubing, the wing used laminated wood spars and built-up wooden ribs, with plywood leading-edge sheeting and fabric overall, and the empennage was a combination of wood and steel-tube construction.
