departure to Hermiston, Oregon. Even better, we get the requested MUELRR ONE SID (standard instrument departure), which heads in the direction we want to go, by weaving through westbound traffic taking off from the other three more-northern runways. We pay particular attention to the altitude restrictions on the SID, because this Lear has no altitude pre-select on the autopilot; it climbs like a saint bound for heaven, and traffic separation on the SID is primarily via an artfully-designed web of altitude changes. The takeoff goes smoothly, but immediately after liftoff we are told to forget about MUELRR ONE; “upon crossing the shoreline, turn left to 200, climb to 9,000 feet, and contact departure”. When we come up on their frequency, departure clears us northbound direct to San Marcus, then flight plan route, FL 220. Shortly thereafter, we are switched to the center frequency, and given FL410, direct Hermiston. Nice handling. •Sometimes, you do get what you want – even at LAX.
