Modifying the Cessna 340TChe Ram onnectionIt’s impossible to discuss Cessna 340s without mentioning the RAM modifications. An estimated 80% of all 340s flying today have had RAM upgrades, which primarily center about RAM’s improvements to the TSIO- 520-NB engines and associated propeller improvements, enabling them to produce 325 to 335 hp. Concurrently, a 300-400 pound takeoff weight increase is included, with the original maximum gross weight retained as a maximum landing weight. RAM enhancements come in Series IV, VI and VII flavors, signifying technologicaladvancements and the chronological sequence of their introduction. The 340 with a RAM Series IV upgrade has 325-hp engines, with a 300-pound takeoff weight increase. The 340’s with Series VI and VII utilized 335-hp engines with a 400-pound weight bump, the newer Series VII being the most-advanced development.RAM Aircraft, LP is located in Waco, Texas, where it’s been working propulsion and performance magic since 1976 on nearly every model of the big-bore 520 Continental engine family. The company overhaulsContinental TSIO-520 engines to turn them into RAM engines, using a proprietary camshaft, improved cylinders and lifters, smoothing induction and tweaking critical areas like baffle seals. The result is boosting the TSIO-520N from 310 horsepower to 325 or 335 hp; new propellers are usually fitted if the props are up for overhaul at the same time.RAM cites enhancement of resale value as an important benefit; the cachet of a RAM package brings prospective buyers the assurance of a better-performing airplane. From an operational standpoint, the 300 or 400 pounds of takeoff weight increase make a RAM 340 a much more capable airplane. Similar higher-weight approvals can be had with the installation of vortex generator kits, but the extra horsepower, RAM insists, provides the needed engine and propeller performance that’s very desirable at these higher weights. There’s more than engines to RAM, however, and the 340 isn’t the only airplane to benefit. RAM has a very active engineering department that has produced over 800 FAA PMA-approved replacement parts that it manufactures and sells all over the world. The bigger 421 and 414 can be similarly enhanced, as can the Cessna Turbo Centurion, Beech Bonanza and Beech Baron14 • TWIN & TURBINEAUGUST 2012
