But tonight that is not an option.By 1900, we are back out at the airport, looking over the airplane in a torrent of rain, wet snow, and gusty wind. Our planned departure time of 2000 hours comes and goes. The Alaska Airlines 737 parked behind us departs on time while we sit on plastic-covered couches, sip bad coffee, wait, and watch as the pressure continues to drop and the weather worsens.MARCH 2013TWIN & TURBINE • 5of a warm bed at home now and checking the weather at some sunny destination, rather than being here in this distant, cold, bleak and rainy place. After some 30 years of doing this, the difference between professional and personal flying still surprises me. This trip would be no exception.At 1700, TL and I are getting a bite to eat and checking the weather. It’s dark already and the weather out the restaurant window is a nasty mixture of blowing rain and snow. A low pressure system has come in from the Gulf of Alaska and is working its way down the coast, dropping the barometric pressure by more than half an inch since our arrival earlier in the morning.
